Round 5 of the WCS $1000 Knockout took place last Monday at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo.
Jernej Simoncic took pole in qualifying ahead of Eros Masciulli, with Kiril Birukov starting fourth.
Race One started in a frantic fashion as Masciulli and Michi Hoyer ran wide at the first corner. The constant jostling for position led to Alejandro Enamorado being rotated at Turn 6.
As Simoncic and Birukov opened up a massive 5 second advantage on the road, the returning David Mroczek acquainted his car to the barrier on the exit of Turn 3 and retired from the session.
Germano Zappala was a man man on a defensive mission. Some circumspect moves under braking led to some contact and half spins for both himself and Hoyer, the latter eventually making his way through at Turn 8.
That period of fighting didn’t help either driver as they were eliminated along with Enamorado and Theodoros Eziroglou.
Simoncic took the victory ahead of Birukov, Masciulli and Vlad Tokarev.
Race Two saw drama from the start as Enamorado dropped the rear off the line, and pitted with damage at the end of the lap. Zappala also hit strife at the start, losing control at Turn 1.
At the races halfway point Birukov hit trouble. Much like Zappala, he lost the rear at the first corner and dropped to the back.
The following lap, Eziroglou and Mroczek collided on the run out of Juncao and in turn fell behind Birukov, who was now back with Zappala. They fought hard until contact at Turn 4 hampered both. Eziroglou was also caught up but all three continued. Birukov then got into Mroczek who lost his wing on the elimination lap. All four would be eliminated at the end of Lap 8.
That all left Simoncic out front, finishing ahead of Masciulli, Hoyer and Tokarev.
Enamorado started pole for the reverse grid race, ahead of Birukov.
Simoncic was in the wall on Lap 1, whilst Zappala retired after making ground to take the lead.
The race settled down, apart from the small contact between Masciulli and Enamorado.
Enamorado and Eziroglou both suffered on the elimination lap and were joined by Tokarev and Mroczek.
Kiril Birukov eventually took the victory in Race Three from Hoyer, with Masciulli taking third.
Simoncic finished the event with two victories to add to his Fastest lap and pole position bonus points.
